About everyone has heard of the AARP.

However, not everyone knows what they do and what the benefits of membership are.

Time to dig a little deeper into the pros and cons of an AARP membership.

What Is AARP

The AARP was known as the American Association Of Retired Persons. But you don’t have to be retired to become a member anymore.

Membership is open to everyone over the age of 50 at a price of $16 a year. You can also get discounts on that when signing up for life.

If you like to sign up you can go to this webpage: https://www.aarp.org/ and click on Join at the top

The AARP’s goal is to provide access to hundreds of benefits and they can vary from financial and health tools to helping you find discounts on a variety of things.

What Are The Benefits Of A Membership

There is a long list of discounts that you can get with your membership but some of the top benefits are the following.

  • Travel
  • Food
  • Car rental
  • Games
  • Medical insurance discounts

I could make this list a lot longer and I wrote about the pass to national parks for seniors as an example of a senior citizen discount.

I also researched what airlines offer senior citizen discounts that can help you.

So, is it worth it?

I was talking to some relatives about the AARP membership and if it was worth it and they mention that many restaurants give you 10% of when you show them your membership card.

I have, however, experienced that just asking for a senior citizen discount in most cases gives you the same discount. So that would not be a reason for me personally to join.

The AARP magazine you get with your membership that comes out 6 times a year plus the AARP bulletin that comes out 10 times a year would be more of a benefit for me.

If you like to decide for yourself if the benefits can convince you to become a member you can find them here https://www.aarp.org/membership/benefits/all-offers-a-z/.

AARP Membership – My Opinion.

I have been reading a lot about the AARP in the last weeks before I decided to write this article.

“I believe that for the majority of seniors the AARP membership can give many benefits.”

Personally, I am not sure yet. Not because of the $16 but because we stay home most of the time since we take care of an elderly relative.

However, I am leaning towards joining if it was just because of the information they share that is tailored to our age group.

I advise you to have a look at their website and see for yourself if it might be saving you money or that just the information they send is worth the, in my opinion, very low cost of joining.
